In honor of Prof. Maya Benish-Weisman’s 50th birthday, lab members collaborated on a unique project: developing a research-based reflection on her mentorship.
The project took the form of a qualitative study, in which 20 current and former lab members reflected on their experiences of being mentored by Prof. Benish-Weisman. Participants represented a diverse range of academic roles, including postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, master’s students, research assistants, and administrative staff, capturing a broad spectrum of perspectives within the lab.
Through thematic analysis of the responses, we identified several key dimensions of Prof. Benish-Weisman’s mentoring approach. These included her exceptional commitment to academic rigor, her ability to balance high standards with a supportive and encouraging environment, and her deeply human and attentive engagement with each individual. Lab members consistently described her as a mentor who not only advances research but also fosters personal growth, confidence, and academic identity.
The findings also highlighted her role in cultivating both individualized mentorship and a strong sense of community. Participants emphasized the unique lab environment she has created, one that encourages collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and mutual support. Beyond the present, her mentorship was also seen as future-oriented, opening pathways for professional development, international collaboration, and academic leadership.
This project resulted in the formulation of a mentorship model that reflects the distinctive combination of academic excellence, humanity, and community-building that characterizes Prof. Benish-Weisman’s approach.
